Ancillary Product Research - School of Rock Poster Analysis

Extra Information:

In the theatrical poster the camera shot of Jack Black is a medium shot. Jack Black is in the foreground of the shot while the children are in the background (so are framed as a long shot).

By having Jack Black as the protagonist this suggests that the target audience will involve fans of Jack Black who may be young men and boys.

Emily's Costume - Day 1 // Production

During day 1 of filming I filmed in 3 locations, and because of this 3 costumes were required.

For the two locations outside (landscape and shed) the coat to the right was used.

Black jeans (as seen below) were in all of her outfits as they compliment each top and the consumer will soon realise in the trailer that they are a piece of clothing that she likes to wear often (due to the darkness of them).

The difference between each outfit was the top she wore. These ranged from a green shirt at the start of the day in the lounge, to a dark green top for the landscape shot followed by a red shirt in the shed. These clearly show that Emily is wearing different costumes and gives the idea that she is being filmed on different days.

This piece of jewellery shows Emily's interest in Lord Of The Rings (as it is a necklace with the ring on). This is a minor piece of one of her costumes but I think attention to detail is important as small things can tell a lot about a person.

Filming - Day 1 // Production

I have just finished my first day of filming with Wilhelmina and it went very well! She arrived on time at 09:00.

The day went as follows..

09:00 - Wilhelmina arrived
09:15 - Filming begun (in location 1)
10:20 - Now in location 2 (filming continued)
10:35 - Now in location 3 (filming continued)
11:40 - Now in location 4 (filming continued)
11:50 - Recorded Wilhelmina's voice-over
12:15 - Wilhelmina left (that's a wrap!)

From this you can see that it all went incredibly productively and a lot faster that I thought it would! (Since we finished 2 hours and 45 minutes before I had planned to, although we did not have any breaks).

Wilhelmina arrived wearing her make-up. I asked her to wear her regular make-up (eyeliner and mascara) and she did so. This is because most teenage girls wear this kind of make-up as well as this amount of make-up which will make Emily seem more relatable to members of my target audience.

As the filming took place I completed this shot log:

Wilhelmina and I have worked together before when filming but this was the first time that Wilhelmina was acting for me and I was completely in charge. I believe I took the role of a leader well and was clear in telling Wilhelmina what I wanted her to do for each shot.

In addition to this I decided to film some extra shots during the day of various things/extra shots of Emily which I thought looked good and could be interesting to include if another shot that I'd planned didn't work so well. For the final location of the day I went into my bedroom and filmed Wilhelmina for some of the shots I intended to do in her (Emily's) bedroom. I realised it wasn't necessary to do it in her bedroom and if anything may work best in mine as I want my trailer to look as though it is a trailer and it shows Emily at various points in the whole film (meaning she'll be in various locations).

To end the day as you can see from the timings above I recorded Wilhelmina's voice over for the trailer using my SL150 Editor's Keys USB microphone. This is very good at recording sound and is my own microphone (so is available to me at anytime for re-recording if necessary).

Filming Begins Tomorrow!

After doing the majority of my pre-production I have scheduled my first day of filming for tomorrow (Sunday the 21st of December). This will only involve Wilhelmina (Emily) as there are a number of scenes with only her in.

I have sent a call sheet to Wilhelmina for tomorrow so she is aware of whats filming will take place and what time she needs to be there.

Here is the call sheet I sent her:

Animatic // Pre-Production

Here is my animatic which I produced from my storyboard by scanning it into my computer and then cropping it to fit to each shot. I have also recorded some dialogue and music to go with it, this I feel, helps provide a better sense of what my trailer will look like.

I do, however, notice that it maybe isn't as long as I want it to be however on days on filming I'm planning to allow extra time for extra shots throughout the day if I feel they're needed.

I recorded Wilhelmina's voice for Emily's part but used my voice for the other two characters (as I couldn't arrange a suitable time to record the others). I also composed the music (guitar, voice and ukulele) that can be heard throughout and I will work on these compositions to include in my actual trailer. Although, it is likely that I will get some target audience feedback on the music so that I can see what they would want to hear and therefore improve my composition in a way that suits what they want.

Call Sheet (rough draft) // Pre-Production

As I am still uncertain which days I will be filming this call sheet is my rough draft/outline that I will use when writing up my actual call sheets. In addition to this I have also scanned in a piece of paper outlining the scenes and their numbers (which I will use as a reference for future call sheets).
