Shot Log (Day 4 & 5) // Production

Filming (Day 4) // Production

Unfortunately, filming was not a great success today. Many technical problems occurred and since this was the first time I had properly used the sound equipment it meant that it took longer for me to figure out what was wrong.

I got to Wilhelmina's house at the time as planned but ended up leaving about 50 minutes later than I was going to in an attempt to get more shots done.

I was able to film one scene with better lighting and sound (although the sound became temperamental near the end of filming the scene).

Here's a short video from day 4:

Behind the scenes photos:

Overall, it was a partly successful day. Due to not being able to film the other scene in Wilhelmina's house with better lighting I will have to do that tomorrow as well as the other filming I planned.

Editing // Titles (Day 1)

Today during my 2 hour lesson I started producing and editing some of the inter-titles for my trailer.  Initially I was using LiveType to produce my main title but for the remaining titles (which can be seen earlier in the film) I am going to use Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014. I haven't used this software before so have spent this time also coming to grips with the key features of it.

Costumes (Day 4 & 5) // Production

As mentioned in earlier posts this day of filming was for re-shooting. Therefore, no extra costumes are needed. Here are the photos of the costumes I used for each location. For explanations of these costumes refer back to earlier posts on costumes.

1st Rough Cut Feedback

After completing the first rough cut of my trailer I felt it was necessary to get feedback from my peers as soon as possible. Therefore, in one of our lessons everyone gathered round to watch it (including my teacher).

The feedback I received was positive although there were some criticisms. These were:

- The long shot of the clock that is shown at multiple times in the film should show different times in the day (e.g. 7am, 12pm). This would give a better impression of time going by and therefore link to the film more effectively instead of just having the same time shown as the trailer progresses.

- My teacher felt the continuity was poor at 0:39 when Emily goes to sit down. This will be taken into consideration and I will slightly length or cut one of the shot to improve this match-on-action.

- There needs to be more shots of the records (the vinyl) at the start cause otherwise the shot at 0:19 just seems quite random. There was a couple of other shots of Emily with the records that I filmed with the intention of putting in but I forgot to so in my 2nd rough cut I will make sure I definitely do.

Titles Questionnaire

Above is a photo of a questionnaire I produced and the answers I received from a random selection of 20 people (10 male, 10 female) in my target audience. The questionnaire asks about the typography they would prefer to see for the main title of my film. I produced a key and wrote on the right hand side the order of popularity (e.g. 1st is the most popular).

Therefore, for the main title of my film I will use 'LiSong Pro'. This feedback from my target audience is important as it lets me know what they want to see and even though this title will only be featured for a couple of seconds in the trailer I still believe it is important to get it right. I aim to not have any part of my trailer that will be something that my target audience doesn't want to see. I will do this by further interaction with my target audience.

1st Rough Cut

During the processing of this rough cut the sound and picture quality seem to have been affected. I was using my editor at home for this rough cut so this should not happen when I use a different editor at school on the Macs.

Recording The Soundtrack // Production

Today I recorded the soundtrack for my trailer. Demos of the tracks I recorded a couple of months ago can be heard in the animatic I produced (see http://katyfilmmakera2.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/animatic-pre-production.html).

As I want my trailer to be of a high standard in every way I felt it was important to re-record these songs especially since I have new recording equipment that is more advanced and I am now more able to create something of the high standard that you would hear in a professional film trailer. This is not to say that what I recorded today will be the final soundtrack but it is definitely a step forward. I will be consulting a lot with my target audience in the coming weeks about sound (and other things such as text, rough edits, etc.) so I can refine what I produce in a way that greatly satisfies my target audience.

Here are some pictures of the equipment I used and the instruments:

How long did it take? Around an hour to set up and record everything.

Additional Equipment!

During my re-shooting later this month to produce shots of a higher quality I am going to need to use some extra equipment in terms of lighting and sound.

Here are the details of the equipment I will be using:

Rode NTG-2 Microphone with boom pole

IANIRO Broad Beam light with stand

I will be borrowing this equipment from school on the 27th of February, 28th of February and 1st of March. During this period of re-shooting I aim to re-shoot some of the shots that I feel need better lighting and sound. This should improve my trailer over all and increase the sense of professionalism that I wish to achieve.

An Update! (re-shooting has been scheduled..)

In the shot above (of Georgina and Bertie) the sound quality was not great. Wind noises could be heard over the dialogue. This is a clear reason for re-shooting.

All shots below have something wrong with them which I have highlighted with a red circle.

All of these mistakes have taught me to be a lot more critical when I'm filming and to properly look at my shots and be actively looking for any mistakes so that I can eliminate them.
