Magazine covers are similar to posters in the way that their aim is to attract the audience towards the film through various colour schemes, images, text, etc. However, there are also many differences between posters and magazine covers. One being that a magazine has the intention of attracting an audience to buy the magazine because of something inside the magazine related to the film that entices them to do so (e.g. an article or a poster).
In my next few posts I will analyse 6 magazine covers (3 mixed genre and 3 that are genre specific). They will be from a range of magazines so I can see how different magazines choose to design their covers.
They are as follows:
mixed genre..
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (EMPIRE)
Paddington (CINEWORLD)
Captain America (EMPIRE)
genre specific...
The Godfather (EMPIRE)
Sweeney Todd (ENTERTAINEMENT)
Black Swan (LITTLE WHITE LIES)
After I have completed all of my 'mixed genre' analyses I will do a quick comparison of 2 covers for the 'Sherlock Holmes' film, one from Empire and the other from Total Film. This will allow me to see different ways of approaching the same film and how they work in different ways.
