Tragedy Music Genre & Ideas // Research & Planning

Music is incredibly important in any trailer as it helps the audience to identify the genre as well as the mood/atmosphere. In some cases a character may have it's own theme so that when they are being shown or about to be shown the audience are expecting to see them.

I will follow the codes and conventions of trailers by including music in my trailer as I believe will enhance the action seen visually and allow me to emphasise the mood/atmosphere that I wish to. The target audience of my trailer is teenagers and young adults so it is crucial in picking (or creating) music that they will enjoy.

Before I think about my target audience I will look into the music used in some tragedy trailers so that I can identify the codes and conventions in terms of music choice and when/how often music is heard.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Sweeney Todd was released in 2007 and directed by Tim Burton. It's a tragedy film (involving the genres drama, horror and musical). The music in this trailer is incredibly dramatic and very much sets the atmosphere and allows the audience to establish the genre just from hearing the trailer.

The genre of the music is 'musical' and therefore orchestral. This works conventionally because in a theatre musical show an orchestra will most likely be used for the music. Some pieces are their to set the atmosphere while others do this as well as being an actual song from the musical, and so the actors can be seen singing along to it. The music changes at incredibly effective times when different characters are shown.

There is no need for me to do a detailed analysis of the music of this trailer as my tragedy trailer will not be a musical.

The key aspect of my trailer is that the main protagonist is a female teenager and my target audience is teenager and young adults. Therefore, the following the genres will be much more suitable (the orchestral music):

- Indie
- Acoustic
- Country

Orchestral music would also be suitable for part of my music (where it is particularly dramatic) however as I am going to produce the whole soundtrack myself I am going to go with an 'acoustic' genre. This will allow me to record my guitar and add other instruments if I feel they are needed.
